Meet the Inventor: Kim Rubin

I have been a dedicated hardware engineer, software architect, and technology founder in California since 1969. While studying Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at U.C. Berkeley, I developed an electronic debit card and controller system adopted across the university’s departments. I scaled the startup and successfully negotiated its acquisition by Pitney Bowes before completing my degree.

Over the past 35 years, I have engineered, patented, and deployed high-consequence enterprise and industrial technology assets for global corporations and government institutions, including:

Enterprise & Sovereign Infrastructure: Engineered forge-proof diplomatic passports for a country in the Middle East, a nationwide fax store-and-forward framework for a country in Asia, a multi-layer circuit board inspection system for a technology company in the Fortune 10, and a mass optical disk storage array for a large US executive branch department.

Public Safety & Surveillance Architecture: Developed a predictive urban gunshot detection system and invisible outdoor localized monitoring arrays to secure high-value public assets.

Mission-Critical Medical Tech: Founded PatientSafe Solutions, a proprietary wireless system that has monitored the administration of over 10 million hospital medication doses at patients’ bedsides—preventing critical errors and saving an estimated 800+ lives.

As a practicing Patent Agent with a deep personal portfolio of over 100 proprietary designs, I engineered WILDFIRE EXTREME PROTECTION from the ground up. This asset represents the culmination of decades of custom industrial electronics, embedded firmware design, and defensive patent strategy—built specifically for seamless commercial acquisition and high-volume manufacturing.

Warning

WILDFIRE EXTREME PROTECTION continuously monitors a 90° field of view for any sign of an approaching wildfire. It generates either a WARNING or an ALARM. It has a local siren and strobe. The always-on free app on your phone gives you an immediate warning — no matter what else you are doing.

How it works

WILDFIRE EXTREME PROTECTION contains these components
• optics
• sensors
• electronics
• computer
• view memory
• communications

Optics

The optical components include
• special front-surface wide-angle mirror
• curved focal plane
• protection window

The mirror magnifies any remote source of energy, such as heat from a fire, on to its curved focal plane. The energy from a wildfire is broad spectrum, meaning that traditional optics such as lenses do not work.

Sensors

93 energy sensors monitor 31 distinct zones in the 90° field of view. Each zone is monitored separately. In addition, all zones are monitored as a group.

Each sensor detects radiated energy from an approaching wildfire. This energy is in the form of heat, light and a wide spectrum that is invisible but powerful enough to cause a house to burst into flames in a matter of seconds.

Electronics

The electronics include 31 high-sensitivity amplifiers, one for each monitored zone. The electronics compare the incoming energy from each zone to a matched reference that is not receiving energy from the zone. The outputs from the amplifiers are scanned every 15 seconds by the internal computer.

Computer

An internal embedded computer, with two 32-bit processors running at 640 MHz, builds historical profiles of each zone. Profiles include sophisticated statistical models. The processors monitor the sensors for each zone against their historical profiles. Any deviation is then analyzed in real-time to determine if a warning or alarm should be generated.

Zone profiles

A critical element of the WILDFIRE EXTREME PROTECTION is the creation of an historical profile of each of the 31 zones for each one of the 96, 15-minute periods of the day. 2976 separate statistical profiles are created and continually updated. A wildfire is detected by a deviation from the matching historical profile. Over 2000 separate parameters are measured and tracked.

Notification

When a WARNING or ALARM condition is detected, both an audible siren and strobe light are activated. A message is sent to the owner’s phone which immediately sounds an audible alarm and a message fills the screen. Notifications are sent via Bluetooth and WiFi. Cellular and satellite communication are options.

The detector

The detector is an outdoor appliance about the size of a toaster. The homeowner or handyman bolts the detector to an exterior wall, such as under an eave. The detector monitors 31 zones over a 90° horizontal and 15° vertical field of view. The always-on detector is completely self-contained. It is powered by any low-voltage source, such as voltage used for small garden lights. Solar power is optional. 72-hours of internal batteries maintain full operation even with a power outage.

Phone app

A free phone app runs continuously in the background. If a warning or alarm is sent, the app provides a loud alarm and fills the screen with a dramatic “ALARM” notice. The app provides additional information, if desired, such as the complete history of each zone, battery status, alarm history, and communication status.

Sensitivity

A wildfire is detected at a distance. The larger the fire, the longer the detection distance. A small campfire is detected at 300 feet. A burn-pile at 1000 feet. A burning house at three blocks. A wildfire at three miles. A detected fire must be in a line of sight. A fire is visible through light foliage and multiple tree trunks. Most fires are detected within one minute.

Stand-alone

WILDFIRE EXTREME PROTECTION operates standalone. It does not require any government or private network or service beyond standard WiFi and bluetooth. There are no monthly fees. No permit is required. In the future, multiple WILDFIRE EXTREME PROTECTION detectors will be networked within a neighborhood to provide an additional level of remote protection beyond line-of-sight.

Price

WILDFIRE EXTREME PROTECTION is expected to retail for $399. It will be available from local hardware and appliance stores, or purchased online. Availability is by the end of 2026.
